The Underground Movement: Stimulus
The underground music scene thrives on passion, authenticity, and a deep connection between artists and their audience. In South Africa, where mainstream sounds often overshadow niche electronic movements, finding spaces that capture raw, unfiltered music is rare. That’s where Stimulus comes in - not just as a party, but as a movement, defined by its diverse, uplifting, and groove-centric sounds.

Founded by Devon Nell, Vanessa Zhang, and co-founder Matthew Otter, Stimulus has methodically built a solid foundation, delivering quality music to a loyal community. But what exactly makes Stimulus stand out in an ever-evolving scene? I sat down with Devon to dive deeper into its origins, the philosophy behind it, where it’s headed next, and his own journey through the landscape of music.
The Beginning
What started as a small escape from the monotony of lockdown soon became something much bigger. Devon’s 30-person gatherings were raw and unfiltered—built on the energy of a close-knit community and a hunger for proper underground sounds. As word spread, these intimate sessions grew organically through social media, eventually drawing 500-strong crowds. Armed with nothing but home studio gear and a vision, Devon unknowingly laid the foundation for what would become Stimulus.
But it wasn’t until 2022, after moving to Cape Town, that the project truly took shape. The city’s electronic music scene had its hotspots, but Devon saw a gap—Hard Groove, a high-energy fusion of classic techno, tribal rhythms, and percussive elements, was barely being represented.

“At the time, Hard Groove wasn’t really a thing in Cape Town,” Devon recalls. “I wanted to start an event that basically pushed that sound.”
Hard Groove soon became more than just a niche sound in Cape Town—it turned into a full-fledged trend, dominating dance floors and shaping the underground scene. While many event brands leaned into the hype, Devon’s philosophy had always been about pushing boundaries rather than following them. Stimulus had no interest in riding the wave of something that was already being rinsed by others.
Instead, he shifted gears, constantly seeking out fresh sounds and unique approaches that set their events apart. It wasn’t just about booking DJs—it was about curating an experience that felt distinct every time. Whether it was through unexpected line-ups, unconventional venues, or digging deeper into underrepresented styles, Devon ensured that Stimulus never felt like just another event brand.
The Home & Identity of Stimulus
Located at 69 Hope St in Cape Town City Centre, Evol is more than just a club—it’s a sanctuary for those who don’t fit the mold, a space where individuality thrives. In South Africa’s nightlife scene, where safe spaces are vital, Evol has built its reputation on attracting the right crowd—people who, in Devon’s words, are “misfits” and those who “go against the grain.”
For Stimulus, this connection runs deep. Evol isn’t just a venue; it’s an extension of their philosophy. The people who gather there reflect the very essence of the brand—outsiders, boundary-pushers, and those who refuse to conform. This spirit is embedded in both their community and their sound, shaping their identity in the music industry.
Taking influence from underground movements like Body Language, and drawing inspiration from international artists such as Bennett, Moodymann, and Spray, as well as local talents like Thor Rixon and Damian Woolward, Stimulus has carved out a distinct sonic and cultural identity—one that stays true to the ethos of individuality, experimentation, and pushing beyond the expected.
What’s Next for Stimulus

We rounded out our discussion focusing on the future of Stimulus, and with its focus on diversity and pushing new sounds, Stimulus is only just getting started. Fresh off the back of hosting a standout event at Texas, a venue in District 6, the team is already looking ahead. As Devon puts it, they’re exploring “new spheres of creativity,” branching into fashion and skating while also growing their Artist Showcase series on SoundCloud.
The plan is to have these new projects fully in motion by the end of 2025, and if there’s one thing that’s clear, it’s that Stimulus isn’t just another event—it’s a movement shaping the underground in its own way. With a growing community and a drive to keep pushing boundaries, the future looks promising.
